Patricia "Patsy" Banks Askins

Patricia Banks Askins gently closed her eyes and went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, May 30, 2012 surround by her loving family. She was born June 17, 1941, in King and Queen County Virginia, daughter of the Lane Mary Ellen and Purcell Banks.

Patricia was united in holy matrimony to Chauncy Askins, Sr. on June 8, 1966.

“Patsy” as she was affectionately known, was a long time employee of Lednums Jewelry Store in Cambridge, Maryland where she wore many hats for over 41 years. Many residents in Cambridge will remember her helping them with their hearing aids, changing watch bands and batteries and selling them a piece of jewelry, always accompanied by her warm demeanor and pleasant smile.

“Patsy” was a faithful member of Bethel A.M.E. church in Cambridge, Maryland. She will be fondly remembered as the Usher who greeted you with a hug and a smile as you entered the church on Sundays and at special events. She lended her voice in song to the Lillian Hollis Singers and was instrumental in creating the Workshop Choir. Her church activities also included being a Missionary, a member of the Pastors Aide Society and a Lay Leader. She was a faithful supporter of the youth in the church, and could be counted upon to help whenever anyone needed her.

“Patsy” was preceded in death by her parents, and step-parents, Oreatha and Winfield Askins.

She will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by her children, Chauncy Askins, Jr.(Erica) of Suffolk, VA, Tonya and Yevette Askins, and Tyria Young(Mark) all of Cambridge, MD; Step-daughter Deneaka Nicks of Baltimore, MD; two sisters, Clara(James) Banks and Nanny(Robert) Taylor all of Virginia; Delema (George) Ames of Cambridge, MD who was like a sister; three aunts, Lilly Bans and Nanny Taylor both of Virginia, and Louise Price of California; two sisters-in law, Deborah (Alfred) Crippen and Oceanious Gibbs of Cambridge, MD; one brother-in law, Conrad Askins of Cambridge, MD; fourteen grandchildren, Myteia Johnson, Ramar Williams, Jasmine Askins, Ramiesha Askins, Trevon Williams, Shanice Askins, Willie Adams IV, Hykeem Askins, RaMyia Askins; five step-grandchildren, Martarné Banks II, Danielle Stanley, Shamia Nicks, Ebony and Patrice Young; four great-grandchildren, Journey Stanton, TréJian Williams, Trinah’de Blake, Treasure Cropper and two step-grandchildren Vaughn Jones and Ashia Young; close friends Esther Benson, Guinivere Banks, Lucy Phillips, Theona Hall, Barbara Sampson, Lillian Jones, Mary Woolford and Delores Perry as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and others she considered her children. Services will be held on Mon., June 4th 12 noon at Bethel AME Church 623 Pine St Cambridge with a viewing one hour prior. Interment in the East New Market Cemetery.
